Corpus supplies the data from which students can uncover patterns on their own. The emphasis is mainly on grammar and vocabulary. In the assignment in question, I worked with Defne. Choosing one confusing issue for English learners, we sought to give a place for the "research-then-theory" approach via Corpus-based instruction.
We utilized MEB English coursebook while deciding on our subject. The initial step was to decide whether we would create our corpus-based materials that would be used in class or out of the class. So, we thought that it would be better to observe the students’ improvement if they were used within the class hours. We aimed at inductive learning which refers to learning by discovery.
Learners are given samples of corpus data containing specific language forms and instructed to develop their own generalizations that they feel would account for the data. We followed a few major steps while preparing the corpus basics materials. These steps were provided to us by the instructions. these steps include a group matching activity, students' working on the corpus themselves, students' encouragement to find out the rule themselves, and practice on the "discovered" items.
Moreover, it is important for the materials we created to be visually engaging to be worked on. As far as I am concerned, it is a really good way of teaching by utilizing corpus since you give students a chance to discover and think about the subject instead of your providing them the exact rules in which all they have to do was to learn by heart.
